Former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John Brennan responded to President Donald Trump’s tweet concerning payments by former Trump-attorney Michael Cohen saying that he was “relieved” Trump would not have the “opportunity to run for public office again.”
“Whenever you send out such inane tweets, I take great solace in knowing that you realize how much trouble you are in & how impossible it will be for you to escape American justice,” Brennan wrote on Twitter on Monday.
“Mostly, I am relieved that you will never have the opportunity to run for public office again,” Brennan added.
Brennan was responding to a tweet written by Trump earlier on Monday, where he defended the two payments to women during the campaign by Cohen who alleged they had affairs with him as “simple financial transactions.”
“Democrats can’t find a Smocking Gun tying the Trump campaign to Russia after James Comey’s testimony. No Smocking Gun...No Collusion.” @FoxNews,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday, misspelling smoking twice.
“That’s because there was NO COLLUSION. So now the Dems go to a simple private transaction, wrongly call it a campaign contribution, which it was not (but even if it was, it is only a CIVIL CASE, like Obama’s - but it was done correctly by a lawyer and there would not even be a fine. Lawyer’s liability if he made a mistake, not me). Cohen just trying to get his sentence reduced. WITCH HUNT!” Trump added.
Court filings made on Friday stated that Cohen told prosecutors for the Southern District of New York that Trump directed him to make the payments to keep a porn star and former Playboy model from talking about the alleged affairs.
The payments are being looked at as possible campaign finance violations and what affect they had on election results.
Top Democrats utilized the information in Friday’s court filings to discuss possible impeachment and prison time for Trump on various network talk shows on Sunday.
